Phoenix is the largest city, as well as the capitol of the state of Arizona. Phoenix was founded near the Salt River in 1868, and was later incorporated as a city in the year 1881. Throughout the years, the city has evolved into a transportation hub for North America, as well as a main transportation, financial, industrial, cultural and economic center of the United State’s southwest region. Phoenix’s earliest economy was based primarily on agriculture. This early economy depended mostly on cotton and citrus farming. The economy has diversified with the growth of population. Numerous high tech and telecommunications companies have located themselves in Phoenix, mainly due to city’s warm climate. In addition, many residents in the area are employed by the government. The city is now home to 7 Fortune 1000 companies: Allied Waste, Avnet, Apollo Group, Freeport-McMoRan, PetSmart, Pinnacle West, and CSK Auto.
